Do At-Home Hair Loss Remedies Actually Work?

Do At-Home Hair Loss Remedies Actually Work?

By Limmer HTC - In Head Scratcher - March 10, 2016

Hair loss is an emotional experience. One day you have a thick, full head of hair, and the next you find handfuls of your hair in your hands or brush. Thankfully, there are ways to slow down hair loss and even grow your hair back thicker that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Various at-home hair loss remedies may promote hair growth. We even offer advice on the most effective supplement solutions at the Limmer Hair Transplant Center.

Biotin

Biotin is one of the most famous at-home hair thinning remedies available, and for good reason. The B-vitamin has proven to nourish hair by metabolizing fatty acids. Research published by the Cambridge University Press suggests that biotin plays an important role in successful hair growth. If you don’t have enough biotin in your body, your body may not be able to correctly metabolize fatty acids, which will likely result in hair thinning. The U.S. Library of Medicine notes that Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, which can result in hair thinning.

We can provide you with the most effective dose of biotin to stop your hair from thinning.

Zinc

Zinc is another proven mineral for hair loss that we offer here at the Limmer Hair Transplant Center. If you have a zinc deficiency, the protein structures that make up your hair follicles may be deteriorating, which can lead to hair loss. A study published in the International Journal of Trichology found that a patient’s zinc deficiency might have significantly contributed to hypothyroidism, which is a well-known cause of diffuse hair loss.

Experts also believe that Zinc plays an important role in the creation of DNA and RNA and keeping hormones balanced. Both of these activities affect hair growth.

Stress Management

Supplements aren’t the only thing that can prevent hair loss. Managing your stress can also save your hair from continuing to fall out, according to The Mayo Clinic. If you experience high levels of stress on a frequent basis, here are some at-home remedies to help you manage your stress from HelpGuide.org:

  1. Regular exercise
  2. Make sure you speak with friends and family on a regular basis
  3. Try to avoid adding any unnecessary stress to your life
  4. Make time for fun
  5. Learn how to alter stressful situations by managing your time better, expressing your feelings or being willing to comprise
  6. Eat healthy foods, try to avoiding drinking, smoking and drugs, reduce caffeine and sugar intake, and get a good amount of sleep.

Caffeine

Caffeine doesn’t just give you energy, it can also stimulate hair growth! A study from the Internation Journal of Dermatology found that hair follicles treated with caffeine not only counteracted the growth suppression by testosterone, but also significantly stimulated hair follicle growth.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a chemical famous for helping people sleep. Though melatonin can have the opposite effect of caffeine, it sure doesn’t put your hair to sleep. As you age, your melatonin loses its potency, and this surprisingly affects hair loss since this drop in melatonin leads to a cut in sleep and the chemicals that support hair growth. This study published in the International Journal of Trichology found that the topical application of melatonin is a viable treatment option for androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness.

Though these at-home hair loss and hair thinning remedies may help your hair grow, it’s important to speak with a hair loss professional before self-treating. Without professional guidance, taking too many supplements could propel your hair loss or lead to other health issues.

We can help you figure out which treatment would be best for you by analyzing your hair health. We offer a variety of at-home hair loss and hair thinning treatments, and would be happy to put you on the path to better hair based on your individual needs. Contact us today!
