What are the Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for Your Hair?
If you’ve ever gone into the hair care aisle at the store looking for something to help your hair stay healthy and glowing, then you know exactly how saturated the hair care market is. There are seemingly thousands of products, using different ingredients, that all claim to be the most amazing product for your hair.
One of the latest trends in hair care products is hemp seed oil. Hemp oil is said to have a lot of different benefits for your hair, including improved hair growth, moisturizing, improving hair strength, and helping to revive past hair damage.
And while there isn’t any conclusive clinical research to back up the claims touted by some of these companies, there is a reason they claim these benefits from hemp seed oil.
What is Hemp Seed Oil?
Before we can understand how hemp oil may benefit your hair, it’s important to know where hemp seed oil comes from and how it’s produced.
Hemp is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant species. And while the plant itself has its own benefits; the hemp seed oil used in hair care products is derived from the seeds of these plants.
Now don’t get confused between hemp and marijuana. What we’re talking about here is a non-psychoactive plant species that does not contain enough THC to produce the mind-altering effects that marijuana does. Hemp has been used legally in all sorts of different products over the years and does not have the same effect as medicinal or recreational marijuana.
Hemp oil is extracted from the hemp seeds by pressing the seeds until the oil is released similar to making olive oil. The clear/green oil that is produced is different from the CBD oil that you hear a lot of people talking about these days. CBD is also derived from the hemp plant, but it uses a different process to extract the oil from the leaves and flowers of the plant.
Can Hemp Seed Oil Help Your Hair?
Now that we understand a little bit about where hemp seed oil comes from, lets talk about the possible benefits of this additive on your hair.
As we mentioned above, there aren’t any definitive clinical studies that prove that hemp seed oil is better than other vitamins and minerals, but based on what we know about other supplements, we can make pretty good guesses on how hemp seed oil can benefit your hair.
Stimulate Hair Growth
Hemp seed oil isn’t going to cause your hair to grow out of control, but due to the fact that it contains omega 3, 6, and 9, along with various fatty acids that are known to help promote blood circulation, can help stimulate hair growth when massaged into the scalp.
Help Moisturize the Hair and Prevent Scalp Irritation
Because of the high fat content of the hemp seed oil, it works as a great moisturizer for your hair and scalp.
One of the reasons your hair can become dry and brittle is due to the lack of natural oils in your hair. This can come from aging, washing your hair too much, low humidity in the air, cholesterol lowering drugs like “statins,” thyroid disease, over-styling with hot irons or blow driers, or just your choice of hair care products.
By utilizing a product with hemp seed oil, you can help restore some of the protective oils to your hair, which will help reduce the dryness you’re experiencing.
Strengthen and Thicken Your Hair
Researchers have found that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can do a great job of thickening and strengthening your hair. And guess what, hemp seed oil is full of these fatty acids.
Omega-3 is the same fatty acid you can find in fish oil supplements, which have been shown to help hair enter its growth phase, or help it stay in that phase for a longer period of time. The result being stronger, thicker hair when used over time.
Help Revive Previous Damage
Oils are truly one the best protectors of our hair, and when you start to strip away those oils you’re going to notice issues. If you have damaged hair, using a product that is fortified with these essential oils, you can help seal the damaged hair and allow it to heal.
While the true benefits of hemp seed oil itself are not fully known, we know what various fats and vitamins are contained within hemp seed oil, which allows us to make a great argument for hemp seed oil being beneficial to hair.
Is it more beneficial than other products that contain similar fats and oils? That’s not entirely known. But there has been some research that has shown that the hemp itself is actually being absorbed and used by the hair as well, which could lead to even further discovery of benefits outside of what we already know.
If you’re looking for a more natural way to help your hair thrive, while also protecting it and keeping it healthy, hemp seed oil is an option worth looking into.
