What Is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant procedure, also known as hair restoration, is a minimally-invasive outpatient procedure which permanently treats hair loss.
At Limmer HTC, we specialize in the two most common hair restoration procedures: the follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and the follicular unit excision (FUE). Both give patients suffering from hair loss incredible, permanent results. However, specific surgical techniques do vary slightly.
For the FUT and the FUE procedures, surgeons will harvest 100s or even 1000s of hair follicles from a patient’s donor area, located on the back of the head. From those suffering from androgenetic alopecia—more commonly known as male-pattern baldness—hair doesn’t readily fall out in this area of the scalp.
If you’re undergoing a FUT procedure, surgeons will remove a small strip of skin from the donor area. This results in a thin linear scar, though it will be entirely hidden under your hair.
With an FUE, our team uses the incredible ARTAS Robotic System. ARTAS is an artificially intelligent robot that removes individual donor follicles through tiny, pin-sized incisions. This highly intelligent, top-of-the-line technology reduces the chance of physician fatigue, creates small dot scars, and allows for shorter haircuts in the donor area to further enhance the final appearance.
For both procedures, once the hairs have been harvested, technicians place the removed follicles into tiny pinpoint incisions made in the areas of the scalp where balding is prevalent.
The entire procedure takes approximately 6–8 hours. Once complete, patients can usually drive themselves home assuming they opted for a local anesthetic. Your surgeon will provide post-op instructions on caring for your scalp.
What Will My Hair Transplant Results Look Like?
By choosing an expert team like Limmer HTC, once your new hair has grown in, no one will know you’ve undergone a transplant—unless you tell them, of course.
Though patients can technically go back to work and resume most activities immediately after their procedure, some downtime is recommended. For up to about a week, soreness and swelling should be expected.
Within a few months, patients will begin to see their own, natural hair grow into formerly balding areas of the scalp. After about a year, they can expect full results—and a thicker head of hair.
Oftentimes, patients are happy with the lusciousness of their hair after their first procedure. However, some do choose to undergo an additional procedures to add more density to the original transplant or to replace further loss of the native hair.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?
Generally speaking, FUE procedures are more expensive than the FUT procedure. This is because of the of intricate training and technology necessary to properly carry out the surgery.
At Limmer HTC, prices start at $6.00 per graft for a FUT and $8.00 per graft for an FUE. That makes a procedure for 500 grafts for a FUT cost $3,000 and for an FUE, $4,000.
However, for both the FUT and FUE, the more follicles you choose to transplant causes the price per follicle to decrease. For example, if you and your surgeon decide on more than 1,500 grafts, the per follicle prices drops to $4.25 and $6.25 respectively.
Both procedures provide stellar final results, but some people will be better suited to one technique over the other for reasons including your budget, hair type, ethnicity, etc.
To choose the best one for you, consult with a hair transplant surgeon.
