Winter is coming, but that doesn’t mean that it’s time to pull the shades and stay inside until spring. We know that sitting on the couch under a blanket, watching your favorite Netflix shows, is a great way to pass the time when the weather gets a little colder, but San Antonio offers quite a few amazing things to do and places to visit during the winter months.

Unlike a lot of areas of the United States, San Antonio typically averages around 65 degrees for the winter months, so nobody should be using the temperature as an excuse to stay indoors. Winter is actually the best time to get out and explore the city without having to worry about sweating through your clothes.

Take advantage of the cooler weather, and check out some of these wonderful places in and around San Antonio during the holidays and winter.

Winter in San Antonio 2024

ICE! Featuring Dr. Suess’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa will be featuring this incredible event from November 23^rd through January 5^th. Guests can walk through colorful ice sculptures based on the holiday classic – “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

In addition to these icy scenes, the resort has more to offer like ice tubing, festive displays, gingerbread decorating, Feast with the Grinch, story time with Mrs. Claus, and much more!

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, this would be a great place to bring the family to soak up all of the holiday cheer spread around the resort.

Holiday Sights & Festive Nights Trolley Tour

Want to see the lights around town, but don’t want to walk around outside? Why not jump on the Old Town Trolley and take a ride through the city while experiencing the amazing light displays that come together each year.

From November 30^th through January 5^th, you and your family can enjoy this 45-minute trolley tour which starts and ends in Travis Park, home to the city’s Christmas tree, ice skating rink, and other holiday vendors and stands. You can also walk just a few blocks to Houston Street to check out all of the downtown holiday festivities.

Holidays on Houston Street runs from November 29^th through January 2^nd and features five blocks of incredible light displays, festive decorations, entertainers, and special offerings from restaurants, shops, and other partners.

Classic Christmas San Antonio at Toyota Field

From November 22^nd through December 29^th, come enjoy all the beautiful light displays, ice skating, Santa experiences, shopping, and more at the Classic Christmas San Antonio.

The stadium transforms for the holidays, and this is one event you won’t want to miss. Crafted by the creators of the World’s Largest Christmas Light Maze, this immersive holiday celebration is sure to be an unforgettable night for the entire family.

Holiday in the Park – Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Six Flags always comes up on our lists of things to do around San Antonio because they offer such a wide variety of events and celebrations – not to mention roller coasters and other thrill rides. For the winter, Six Flags Fiesta Texas transforms into a winter wonderland full of incredible light displays, holiday-themed treats and food, a variety of different holiday attraction and shows, and of course the Holiday Express train.

If amusement parks are your thing, then Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a great place to visit and experience their Holiday in the Park event. This event starts on November 23^th and runs through December 23^rd.

Ice Skating at Rotary Ice Rink at Travis Park

When you think of winter you think of snow, cold, and ice, and what better place to celebrate all of those things than at the Rotary Ice Rink at Travis Park.

Starting November 15^th and running through January 5^th, enjoy incredible outdoor ice skating in downtown San Antonio. Skate amongst the buildings and lights of the city, while listening to holiday music and holding hands with your favorite person.

Space in the ice rink is limited – skaters will be allowed to enter every 30 minutes, and time reservations are required, so be sure to plan ahead!

Reindeer Dash 5K & Rudolph Kids Dash

Looking to get a little exercise in this winter? The Reindeer Dash 5k and Rudolph Kids Dash takes you through the Leon Valley Greenway Trails and is a great event for the whole family.

Even if you’re not an avid runner, this race is a great introduction. Bring the kids and explore the trails. There will be holiday music, Santa sightings, as well as various vendor booths to check out.

The race is on December 17^th and requires you to register online ahead of time.

Holiday Light Displays

Throughout San Antonio, you’ll find a variety of creative and impressive holiday light displays. The River Walk lights will transform the area starting on November 30^th through January 12^th and are one of our favorite displays in the entire city.

The San Antonio Zoo will also have their famous Zoo Lights event happening from November 16^th through December 31^st. New this year is a beautiful Lakeside Lightshow that reflects over Big Lake. Experience the San Antonio Zoo like you’ve never seen it before.

illuminate at the San Antonio Botanical Garden is back again and if you missed it last year, you’re not going to want to miss it this year.

This event runs from November 16^th through December 31^st and transforms the Botanical Gardens into an incredible light-up display that rivals the best in the city. Immerse yourself in a magical experience at the San Antonio Botanical Garden with an extraordinary exhibition by Tianyu Arts & Culture. Wander through captivating, illuminated displays that beautifully unite art, nature, and culture in a radiant celebration of light. Discover towering sculptures, intricate creations, and dazzling landscapes that promise to amaze and inspire.

Natural Bridge Caverns – Lights, Carols, Santa & S’Mores

The Natural Bridge Caverns does Christmas right! Explore Texas’ largest underground caverns while enjoying your favorite holiday carols. You can also experience their 30-foot-tall Christmas tree and over 1/3-mile trail of lights. Santa and his reindeer will be on hand to take photos, while Mrs. Claus will be telling stories as you enjoy s’mores, live music, and more.

The Natural Bridge Caverns are always an amazing sight to see when visiting San Antonio, but they really come alive for the holidays.

Bike The Mission Reach Trail

The Mission Reach Trail includes approximately 15 miles of bike-friendly paths throughout San Antonio. This bike-trail allows you to explore San Antonio’s historic missions which include the famous Alamo. You’ll also get to experience Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan Capistrano, and Mission Espada. The Mission Reach Trail is a perfect activity for the winter when the sun isn’t as hot. It can be tough to ride during the San Antonio summer heat, but the mild winter temperatures provide the perfect climate for the 15-mile bike adventure through the incredible missions of San Antonio. All five missions are actually recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

So jump on that bike and experience some of the incredible history of San Antonio this winter.

Caroling on the River Walk

If you’re talking about San Antonio, it’s hard to not mention the River Walk. The San Antonio River Walk is an incredible stretch of river running through the city, flanked on either side by shops, restaurants, and more. Throughout the year it’s a great place to walk and enjoy, but during the winter it lights up with holiday cheer.

Through all of December you can sing and celebrate the holidays with your friends and family on a boat ride through the river. If you don’t want to rent a boat, caroling and singing is encouraged from the banks of the river as you enjoy the lights from the boats and businesses along the River Walk. If you’ve never experienced winter along the San Antonio River Walk, we highly suggest taking a trip down.

Lighted Holiday Parade & Sip N Stroll – Seguin

On Thursday December 5^th in Seguin, Texas, (about 45 minutes outside of San Antonio) you’ll get to experience one of the best lighted holiday parades in Texas. This parade features over 70 different floats and parade vehicles completely covered in lights to celebrate the holidays.

Follow the parade as it makes its way from Austin and College down Austin Street to Central Park. Once the parade reaches its conclusion, the mayor will turn on the lights in downtown Seguin while Santa Claus is available for photos.

The following day from 6pm to 9pm, you’ll be able to stroll through the downtown area and enjoy beverages and food from dozens of different vendors. You’ll also get to experience live entertainment from the Seguin High School Star Steppers as well as photos with Santa.

This is a great way to kick off the winter season and jump right into the holidays!

Take Advantage of San Antonio Winters

With the cooler weather moving in and the holiday season approaching, now is the time to head outside and take advantage of all that San Antonio has to offer without having to deal with the heat.

Winters in other cities can force many people inside due to the cold, but San Antonio provides a perfect backdrop for making some incredible winter memories.
