The holiday season is upon us which means cities and towns all across the country are getting into the festive spirit, and San Antonio is no different.
While it may be difficult to envision a holiday season without the cold and snow that a lot of the country experiences during the winter months, there are still plenty of festive things to do in the southern states. Whether you’re looking to go ice skating, visit Santa, or just walk around and experience the incredible light decorations throughout the city, San Antonio does not disappoint when it comes to the holidays.

The holidays in San Antonio are filled with many great activities and experiences. Just because we may not get much snow in the area, doesn’t mean we’re not full of the holiday spirit.
Holiday Light Displays
One of the awesome things about San Antonio during the holidays is all the beautiful light displays. There is no shortage of places to visit that incorporate light decorations and shows into their public spaces.
Here are a few places you can’t miss if you’re looking for some truly outstanding light displays.
San Antonio Riverwalk
The #1 attraction in San Antonio is our prized Riverwalk. If you’ve ever walked down the San Antonio Riverwalk then you know how great of an area it is, but everything is better with light displays! From now until January 10th, take a free stroll down the Riverwalk and experience the spectacular displays of over 100,000 lights draped 100s of feet up and over the trees and along the river that winds its way through restaurants, shops, hotels and bars. You can also enjoy the lights from the San Antonio River Cruise boats. The boat tour guides are full of great San Antonio history and trivia! Plenty of festivities and food to partake under the canopy of lights.
San Antonio Botanic Garden Lightscape
Get tickets to visit the San Antonio Botanic Garden Lightscape that runs from now until January 22nd. An incredible light display has been setup throughout all 38 acres of the property featuring some of the most exquisite and captivating light installations you’ll ever see.
Santa’s Ranch
Located in between San Antonio and Austin, in New Braunfels, you’ll find Santa’s Ranch, an incredible drive-through light display featuring over 1.5 million custom made lights. Santa’s Ranch runs from now until January 2nd, so be sure to get your tickets soon!
Zoo Lights
The San Antonio Zoo lights up after dark with their annual zoo lights tradition. Experience incredible themed light displays throughout the zoo including their new 32-foot LED Christmas tree. You can ever partake in their new Holiday Sing-Along Express train ride through the property. Zoo lights runs from now through January 2nd.
Ice Skating in the Park
Think it’s too hot for ice skating in Texas? Think again. Looking for a place to enjoy some outdoor ice skating this holiday season? Travis Park is just the place you want to be! The Rotary Club has setup an incredible outdoor ice rink right near the annual Christmas tree where you can feel like you’re a kid again. Ice skating at the Rotary Ice Rink runs from now until January 2022.
Holiday Night Market at Pearl
The Pearl campus in San Antonio lights up every year for the holidays. Enjoy festive music and local makers for the best in holiday shopping. Every Wednesday night starting December 1st, you can find different vendors and experiences until December 22nd. This is a great place to gather, enjoy food or drink, and get into the holiday spirit. And in case you hadn’t heard, the Riverwalk has an expanded trail that allows you to walk from the main section downtown, directly to Pearl.
Nutcracker Ballet at Tobin
Want to stay warm and enjoy a traditional holiday show at the ballet? Ballet San Antonio will be putting on the annual holiday classic “The Nutcracker” starting in December. The show features a children’s cast of over 100 children and features 7 of the community’s frontline heroes. You can see this Christmas classic in San Antonio’s State-of-the-art Tobin Center. Ford Holiday River Parade
One of the highlights of the holiday season in San Antonio is the annual Ford Holiday River Parade. This parade flows through our very own Riverwalk in the heart of downtown San Antonio. It features illuminated floats and costumed parade participants. It lasts about an hour and offers both ticketed areas and free viewing areas. Free viewing areas are first come first serve and do fill up quickly, so we recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time. Or for an extra special experience, choose one of the many Riverwalk restaurants for “dinner and a show” with dinner seating in view of the river parade.
Six Flags Holiday in the Park
Experience Six Flags Fiesta Texas like you’ve never experienced it before. Alongside all of the regular rides and attractions you’ll find the park decorated with millions of lights this holiday season. Enjoy a variety of holiday themed shows, food, drinks, and even our Holiday Express themed train ride around the property. Six Flags Fiesta Texas knows how to do the holidays right and it’s a perfect place to spend a day enjoying all they have to offer. Plus, you can end your night with a spectacular fireworks show at the park.

San Antonio is a very festive city, in fact we’re known for our annual spring festival called “Fiesta!” We know how to bring the joy of the holidays to the community. With so many different events, light displays, and shows happening during the holiday season, it was hard to choose our favorites.
